Adult opossums AKA possums are about the size of an average house cat and are solitary, nocturnal animals with a long pointed pink nose, furry black to white fur; scaly, prehensile tail; black ears and a hind foot with a clawless, opposable first toe. They are known for their nocturnal scavenging and being omnivore they will eat anything from road kill to garbage to fruits and seeds (insects, snails, rodents, berries, fruit, grass and leaves, eggs and vegetables), as they are commonly found in suburban areas. Sharing many similarities to nuisance-prone raccoons. When alarmed and unable to escape, the possum may fall into a state of shock and unconsciousness, and may appear to be dead, hence the term "Playing Dead" although they prefer to avoid confrontation, these gentle, placid little creatures will hiss, growl and show their teeth when threatened! The litter size can be up to 13 babies, and the mothers feed their babies in their pouch for 2-3 months. They are then carried around on the mother's back for another 1-2 months. Predators include dogs, cats, hawks, and owls, and of course, humans (and cars). Occasionally, Possums become a nuisance and require removal & prevention.

ENTRY

Opossums/possums can be found living in attics, garages, sheds, under decks & porches. They often take over dens that used to be occupied by skunks or raccoons.
